How to play

English is a layer cake: an Old English core, Viking loans, Latin and French from conquest and church, Greek from science, Arabic from trade. Watch each word sprout: color every part with the language it sprang from.

• Each day you get 4 words, split into their parts.
• Pick a language from the palette, then tap a part to paint it.
• Check your painting — right parts lock in, wrong parts clear. You get 3 checks per word.
• Stuck? The Clue button reveals the hint hiding in the word — free, and it's the whole point.

The colors never change. Learn them once in the field guide, and you'll start spotting the layers everywhere.
